What an Outdoor Kitchen Actually Needs Before You Build One

A homeowner in North Augusta called us excited about an outdoor kitchen he’d been planning for months. He had the layout sketched out, a grill picked out, even tile samples for the counter. What he hadn’t thought about yet was where the gas line would run, whether his existing electrical panel had room for another circuit, or what happens to that beautiful tile counter after a summer of afternoon thunderstorms rolling in sideways. Those questions weren’t the fun part of his plan. They ended up being the part that actually determined whether the project was straightforward or expensive.

That’s the pattern with outdoor kitchens more than almost any other backyard project. The visible parts, the grill island, the counter, the seating, get all the attention in the planning stage. The parts that actually make the project work or fail are the ones nobody thinks about until a contractor asks.

Gas and Power Come First, Not Last

If you want a built-in gas grill rather than a freestanding propane unit, you need a natural gas line run to that spot in your yard, which usually means digging a trench and, depending on your home’s setup, possibly upsizing your gas meter if you’re adding significant new demand. This is not a same-day addition. It needs to be planned and often permitted before anything else gets built around it.

Power is the other piece that gets overlooked. A mini fridge, task lighting, maybe a warming drawer or an outdoor television nearby all draw on circuits that your existing outdoor outlets probably weren’t designed to handle. Figuring out whether your electrical panel has capacity for a new dedicated circuit, and how far that circuit needs to run, is a conversation worth having before you fall in love with a layout that puts the fridge somewhere inconvenient to wire.

Drainage Decides Where You Can Actually Build

An outdoor kitchen needs a stable, level surface, which usually means a concrete pad or paver base designed specifically to handle the weight of stone or masonry construction, not just a patio extension poured with the same specs as the rest of your yard. Just as important is where water goes when it rains. A kitchen built at the low point of your yard, or without proper slope away from the structure, ends up sitting in standing water after every storm, which is a problem for cabinetry, appliances, and the base itself over time.

This is also where shade planning connects to something practical rather than just comfort. An outdoor kitchen with no cover at all means every appliance, and you, are dealing with direct Augusta sun for a good chunk of the day. A pergola or partial roof over the cooking area does double duty: it keeps you from cooking in full sun in July, and it protects finishes and electronics from sun and rain exposure that shortens their lifespan.

Appliances That Are Actually Rated for Outdoors

This one catches people off guard. A refrigerator, for instance, built for indoor use will run constantly and burn out faster in an unconditioned outdoor space, especially somewhere as humid as the CSRA gets in summer. Outdoor-rated appliances are built with different insulation and components specifically to handle temperature swings and moisture that indoor units aren’t designed for. It costs more upfront and it’s not optional if you want the equipment to last.

Sequencing Actually Matters Here

The mistake we see most often is choosing finishes and layout before the utility work is scoped. Gas line placement and electrical capacity should shape where things go, not the other way around. Once you know where gas and power can realistically reach, and once the pad and drainage plan account for the site’s actual slope, the layout decisions get a lot more straightforward, and you avoid discovering mid-project that your dream layout needs a gas line run twice as long as planned.

If you’re at the sketching-on-a-napkin stage, that’s exactly the right time to get someone out to look at your gas meter, your panel, and your yard’s actual grade. It changes what’s realistic to plan around, and it’s a much easier conversation to have before concrete gets poured than after.
